Enter a dreamscape of a forest through myth and movement in this evocative dance theatre experience, choreographed by Sreelakshmy Govardhanan.
‘Vanya’ is a dance theatre production that explores the cycles of Srishti (creation), Sthithi (stability), and Laya (dissolution), drawing on the ancient wisdom embedded in mythology and the world around us. Envisioned by Sreelakshmy Govardhanan, the work unravels stories set in an untamed forest – a realm where unseen energies guide existence.
The choreography journeys through surreal tales, culminating in the arrival of the Goddess and her troupe, evoking trance, joy, and surrender. Inspired by the Indian theatre traditions of Kuchipudi, Yakshaganam, and Kathakali, and layered with contemporary expression and aerial choreography, ‘Vanya’ is an ode to the primal power and cyclical abundance of the Universe.
The performance emphasises retelling mystical and intriguing sagas that unfold in and around a forest – a space where the joy of the earth remains untouched and, at times, unkempt. The forest becomes a living entity, carrying the progression of unseen, intangible forces that are only felt through their essence and presence.
Life on this planet is momentary. Once the Earth faces destruction, what follows is a quiet, powerful regeneration – a return to abundance, echoing the vastness and strength of nature. The sole human figures in this choreography, Ravana and Bhima Sena, embody the rupture of an otherwise serene and balanced world. In contrast, the remaining characters personify elements of nature, dwelling in a state of surrender and celebration. Even in the face of warning, they rejoice. The cycle of Srishti, Sthithi, and Laya – a never-ending miracle of creation – continues.
