Step into a theatrically witty performance as veteran performer Ramaa Bharadvaj brings to life the 2,500-year-old origin of Indian dance and theatre through humour, storytelling, and movement.
Before theatre became what we know today, it began as a divine idea and was meant to entertain, educate, and bring people together. This solo performance draws from the ‘Natyashastra’, a 2500-year-old Sanskrit text, to explore how dance, drama, and music were first created, and why they remain such an important part of our culture.
Scripted and performed by acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and storyteller Ramaa Bharadvaj, ‘Avatarana – The Story of Natya’, bears all the hallmarks of her compelling story-theatre style. Using expressive storytelling, movement, humour, and original music by Praveen D. Rao, she brings ancient characters and moments to life in a way that feels fresh and relevant. The performance is interactive, insightful, and especially timely with the ‘Natyashastra’ being recognised by UNESCO.
As Ramaa Bharadvaj continues to make traditional stories accessible across India and the world, her work has garnered many prestigious laurels along the way, including the California Arts Council’s Director’s Award.
