Renowned Kathak artist Vaswati Misra brings a fresh and imaginative perspective to the Ramayana in this dynamic, dance-led retelling.
Witness Kathak exponent Vaswati Misra recreate the legendary tale of the Ramayana through dance, drama, and depictions of daily life in this evocative, movement-based production. Set in the traditional gurukul, ‘Baal Ramayan’ follows a group of young students, guided by their acharya, gradually discovering the epic as their daily lessons transform into living scenes from the story. As the journeys of Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana unfold, the line between learning and legend gently dissolves.
From spirited archery practice and the breaking of the Shiva dhanush to the forest exile and the climactic battle in Lanka, each episode is seamlessly woven into the children’s rhythm of study, play, and reflection. Kathak serves as the primary medium of expression, blending classical dance with theatre and storytelling to engage young audiences in themes of courage, empathy, and duty – offered in a format that feels both accessible and inspiring.
Vaswati is a senior disciple of Pandit Birju Maharaj and founder of Dhwani, a cultural organisation dedicated to performance and arts education. Her work combines the rigour of classical Kathak with evocative stagecraft, creating experiences that are rooted in tradition yet resonate deeply with contemporary sensibilities.
