Making its Mumbai premiere, this dramatic reading of D.B. Mokashi’s Vatsyayana journeys through time, text, and desire to explore love, longing, and human connection.
What did love, desire, and morality mean in ancient India? ‘Kamaturanam’ brings these timeless questions and their contradictions to life through the eyes of Vatsyayana, the legendary author of the ‘Kama Sutra’. Edited and directed by Madhuri Purandare, this dramatic reading draws from D.B. Mokashi’s vivid reimagining of Vatsyayana’s world, capturing both its intellectual depth and emotional nuance.
Performed by Madhuri Purandare, Kiran Yadnyopavit, and Hrishikesh Joshi, the evening weaves together a rich collection of classical and folk texts. Excerpts from the Gatha Saptashati offer glimpses of romance and bold expression from King Hāla’s era, while playful tales from the Shukabahattari reflect on the comic absurdities of love and social convention. The journey concludes with selections from Anand Sadhale’s Anandadhwaj Stories, a vibrant anthology of erotic folktales from around the world, blending humour with unexpected wisdom.
Presented by the Maharashtra Cultural Centre, ‘Kamaturanam’ is a rare confluence of scholarship, theatre, and storytelling – offering a compelling lens on how intimacy and human connection have been imagined through the ages.
