Get ready to be mesmerised as Sangita Chatterjee brings Draupadi’s inner world to life in this stunning Kathak production inspired by Dr. Pratibha Ray’s Yagyaseni.
Inspired by Dr. Pratibha Ray’s celebrated novel, this dance-theatre production reimagines Draupadi as not just a central figure of the Mahabharata, but its ultimate offering – the aahuti (sacrificial oblation) – in the pursuit of dharma.
Conceptualised, choreographed, and performed by Kathak artist Sangita Chatterjee, the production traces Draupadi’s journey through the roles imposed on her – as daughter, wife, and mother – and the inner strength she forges in response. In moments of deep personal loss and spiritual awakening, her connection with Krishna becomes both an anchor and a guide.
Rooted in the sensuous and expressive vocabulary of the Lucknow Gharana, Sangita’s Kathak blends rhythm, abhinaya (expressive storytelling), and narrative with striking effect. Co-written by Avery Chauray, the theatrical production features music by Saroj Mohanty with lyrics by Himanshu Srivastava.
‘Yagyaseni – The Ultimate Oblation’ offers a layered portrait of a woman who embodies resilience, surrender, and brilliance all at once. Experience it for yourself!
