Explore rare poetic voices in this thought-provoking dance & music recital that traces the themes of desire, faith, and activism.
Words of inspiration from India's first female teacher, writings of unabashed desire from the heart of Tamizh land, questions of existentialism posed by Buddhist nuns, prose that interrogates speciesism, and verses that subvert gender roles and patriarchy — Akhyāt - Ākhyānā offers an insight into the female perspective on desire, denouncement, faith, and activism. Only this time, through poetry authored by women themselves! Led by Bharatanatyam artist Divya Ravi, thise unique dance and music performance translates these narratives into an immersive experience, weaving together multilingual poetry with choreography that challenges patriarchy and redefines femininity.
Divya’s expressive dance captures the essence of these verses, drawing from her deep training under respected mentors such as The Kirans and Mavin Khoo. Her mastery in interpreting poetry through movement is enriched by the musical compositions of Sharan Subramanian. The showcase also draws its beauty from DV Prasanna Kumar on nattuvangam, Srihari Rangaswamy on mridangam, and Mahesha Swamy on flute.
Having presented her work internationally, Divya is celebrated for her sensitive and evocative choreography, and her ability to skillfully transform abstract ideas into gestures and emotions. As a graded Doordarshan artist and recipient of global recognition, her artistry invites audiences to reflect on indigenous feminism and cultural heritage.
