French-Lebanese trumpeter Maalouf kicks off the night with his internationally-acclaimed 11-piece band, Trumpets of Michel-Ange. The opening line-up mixes strains of folklore with a freewheeling fire, bringing the audience a blend of tradition and innovation. Known for his mastery of the quarter-tone trumpet and signature high-energy performances, the two-time Grammy nominee blends jazz, classical, and his forte of Arabic traditions. As the festival-favourite artist moves through his repertoire of myriad sonic influences, surrender to a dreamlike journey where Eastern maqams meet the improvisational spirit of jazz.
The air now scented with sounds born entirely of the evening, transition to the transcendental tunes of Richard Bona – a globally celebrated bass player, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. The Grammy winning artist along with his band Richard Bona Group conjures a rich blend of Afrobeat, jazz, and World Music. With his virtuosic bass playing, smooth vocals, and infectious energy, the legend belts out a selection of his all-time hits, bringing his signature warmth and storytelling to the stage.
