Based on Man Booker Prize award winning book by Yann Martel, ‘Life of Pi’ makes its debut in India at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.
The five-time Olivier award-winning production 'Life of Pi' is making its India debut at The Grand Theatre, at Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre. Based on Yann Martel's acclaimed Man Booker Prize-winning novel, directed by Max Webster and produced by Simon Friend, this stage adaptation by Lolita Chakrabarti, tells an epic tale of resilience and optimism.
The story follows a harrowing shipwreck in the Pacific Ocean, where adrift on a lifeboat a 16-year-old Indian boy Pi Patel, survives 200 days with a woeful zebra, an evil hyena, a soulful orangutan named Orange Juice, and the most unexpected stowaway - a Royal Bengal Tiger. As they face the unforgiving elements of nature, the question of who will survive looms large, making it a beautiful combination of beauty and brutality.
The production features larger-than-life sets that transform to represent different places and times, reflecting Pi's memories. The use of props and symbolism, along with carefully designed costumes, helps evoke a sense of time and place. Bringing it alive with elements of uncertainty, one is in for a leap of imagination with the marvelous sets and the fantastical puppetry.
This spectacular international theatrical spotlights animals as lifelike creatures by seasoned puppeteers, where each is operated by multiple performers choreographed to create realistic movements. Puppet and Movement Director Finn Caldwell's craftsmanship and orchestrated movements have been critically acclaimed, earning the seven performers who puppeteer the tiger 'Richard Parker' a collective Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.
Additionally, the production won three Tony Awards for set design by Tim Hatley, Nick Barnes, and Finn Caldwell, as well as lighting design by Tim Lutkin and Andrzej Goulding. 'Life of Pi' debuted to rave reviews at the Crucible Theatre in Sheffield in 2019 and concluded its successful West End run on January 15, 2023.
Come experience the magic of storytelling and puppetry as 'Life of Pi' blurs the line between reality and fantasy. Book your tickets now to witness the story of endurance and hope, in an epic journey.
