Blending tradition with contemporary themes, this anthology of four Bharatanatyam pieces explores silenced voices, social questions, and the enduring power of love.
In this dance-theatre production, artists from Aayana Dance Company present four Bharatanatyam works that reflect on love, identity, and the choices we make as human beings. Each piece transforms personal stories into universal questions, weaving classical vocabulary with ideas that resonate deeply in today’s world.
The performance opens with Panchakanya Panchajāthi Alaripu, a piece inspired in part by Barbie that reimagines the silenced voices of five women from Indian lore. A Shabdam based on the poetry of Sri D. V. Gundappa poses quiet yet powerful questions about society. The familiar Sakhi He is recast as a backdrop for queer love, and Pavamāna closes the evening with a poignant reminder of how love brings light during times of struggle.
Aayana Dance Company is a contemporary Bharatanatyam ensemble known for fusing tradition with bold, fresh storytelling. Founded to present Indian classical dance in meaningful new contexts, the company has performed at major festivals in India and abroad, earning acclaim for productions that remain rooted in classical form while engaging modern audiences with honesty and innovation.
