Writer-director Durga Venkatesan reimagines the garam roti as a metaphor for women’s lives where private truths echo as collective reflection.
Written, directed, and performed by Durga Venkatesan, this Hindi drama unfolds through an unusual duo—Durga and a sentient stereo player named Lakshmi—who embark on a performance of truths, dares, and raw confessions. At its heart lies a challenge to the patriarchal construct of the ‘good girl’ and the relentless pressure to conform.
Durga’s search for what defines ‘a woman’ lands on the everyday image of a garam roti, a flatbread that becomes a powerful metaphor for labour, perfection, expectation, and quiet rebellion. What begins as personal reflection evolves into a collective act of listening, as recordings of women from across India spill into the space, transforming the performance into a living archive, the Garam Roti Library.
Blending fiction and reality, intimacy and collectivity, the play becomes an investigation into invisible fears and the roles women are asked to play, both performed and internalised.
