Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee Dr. Nandini Ramani presents a lecture-demonstration on the Thanjavur lineage of Bharatanatyam, featuring a documentary on T. Balasaraswati and a moving performance with her daughter and disciple Sushama Ranganathan.
This session delves into the traditional repertoire of the Thanjavur lineage, exploring its historical roots, the Margam structure, and key elements of nritta and abhinaya. Attendees will also view Those Who Have Stood the Test of Time (Kaalatthai Vendravarkal), a documentary celebrating the legacy of T. Balasaraswati, whose distinctive style Dr. Ramani proudly continues. The interactive segment will culminate in a performance by Dr. Ramani and her disciple-daughter Sushama Ranganathan, presenting Maharaja Swati Tirunal’s Telugu composition Valapu Taala Vasamaa.
Daughter of Sanskrit scholar Dr. V. Raghavan, Dr. Ramani is a veteran exponent trained under T. Balasaraswati and nattuvanar K. Ganesan, with additional training in Carnatic vocal music from Prof. B. Krishnamoorthy and Vidusi T. Mukta. Honoured with the Central Sangeet Natak Akademi Award by the President of India, she is celebrated for her multifaceted contribution to Bharatanatyam.
Bringing together film, biography, and live dance, the workshop offers a rare insight into one of Bharatanatyam’s most profound legacies.
