Padmashri awardee Ileana Citaristi takes audiences on a journey through the many dimensions of Odissi, from devotional hymns and lyrical rhythm to epic tales of injustice and a contemporary reflection on the resilience of women.
From timeless invocations to urgent modern voices, this performance explores the evolving language of Odissi under the visionary direction of Ileana Citaristi. The evening unfolds across four distinct works. It begins with Ganga Pranam, a hymn by Adi Shankaracharya that venerates the river as a source of joy and liberation. This is followed by Sabari, a charya pada which glorifies the female nature in the form of yogini, women from the lower strata of society, capable of leading the seeker to salvation. Next comes Pallavi, a pure dance piece that celebrates melody and rhythm through raga Belaboli and tala Ektali.
With Anyaaya, the performance brings injustice centre-stage, reimagining the stories of Amba, Medea, and Draupadi—three women who defied betrayal and sought justice on their own terms. It concludes with Sharira, a strikingly contemporary work that reflects on the female body as both a site of oppression and a source of resistance.
With music by Roshan Dasgupta, Lakshmi Kanta Palit, Gopala Chandra Panda, and Sangita Panda, ‘Explorations in Odissi’ blends classical precision with modern resonance. Citaristi and her ensemble honour tradition while pushing its expressive boundaries, asking timeless questions about justice, resilience, and the enduring strength of women.
