Curated by Kalpesh Dalal, this captivating dance showcase traces the folk and tribal heritage of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa.
Tracing a vivid journey from the desert’s echoes to coastal melodies, the performance celebrates Western India’s diverse traditions through music, movement, and storytelling. Conceptualised and directed by Kalpesh Dalal, ‘Maru Se Sagar’ features over 36 artists who bring alive the rich cultural rhythms and vibrant stories of these distinct regions.
The performance opens in the desert lands of Rajasthan, where the soulful voices of the Langa-Manganiar musicians echo through the air, followed by the hypnotic grace of the Kalbelia dance and the balancing brilliance of Bhavai. From there, the journey moves into Gujarat’s tribal heartlands, where the acrobatic energy of Kahalya Nritya meets the powerful African-influenced beats of the Sidi Dhamal.
In Maharashtra, the stage comes alive with the expressive dynamism of Lavani and the devotional strength of Dhangari Gaja. The finale arrives in Goa, where the lyrical Dekhni dance and luminous Samay formations embody the coastal spirit—a confluence of light, festivity, and faith.
With meticulous curation and authentic choreography, ‘Maru Se Sagar’ offers an evocative tapestry of traditions that connect the arid desert to the sea, celebrating India’s living heritage in all its colour and vitality.
