Pandit Raja Kale invites audiences into the world of Thumri, Tappa, and Bandish, where emotion, rhythm, and tradition come together through his soulful artistry.
This performance beautifully presents three evocative forms of Hindustani vocal music, where each form carries its own distinct expression—the tenderness of Thumri, the agility of Tappa, and the profound depth of Bandish. Together, they reveal the emotional and aesthetic breadth of the Hindustani tradition.
Evolving over centuries and regions, these forms embody the spirit of tradition and transformation. Thumri, which originated in 18th-century Lucknow as a romantic and expressive style, later gained devotional depth in Banaras, while the Punjab ang introduced rhythmic flair and bol-banav. Rooted in the folk songs of Punjabi camel riders and refined by Shori Miyan, Tappa offers a lively interplay of melody and rhythm through swift taans and intricate phrasing. The Bandish, shaped by various gharanas across generations, continues to carry the creative imprint of legendary performers whose interpretations have defined its enduring legacy.
A devoted disciple of the legendary Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, Pt. Kale carries forward the Abhisheki Gayaki Parampara with sensitivity and grace. His music reflects the refined influences of the Agra and Jaipur gharanas, characterised by warmth, lyricism, and emotional depth.
Accompanied by Sudhir Nayak on harmonium and Mandar Puranik on tabla, Pt. Kale’s renditions, steeped in bhava, move beyond form to touch the heart. Having studied the philosophies of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, Pt. Kumar Gandharva, and Pt. Jasraj, his artistry remains deeply rooted in introspection and the poetic essence of his tradition, offering not just music, but a profoundly felt experience.
This performance is supported by Reliance Foundation.
