The multi-award-winning love story that threatened an empire returns to The Grand Theatre.
Mughal-E-Azam, a musical masterpiece, produced by Deepesh Salgia under the patronage of Shapoorji Pallonji and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, is set to return to The Grand Theatre on popular demand. Based on K. Asif’s 1960 film of the same name, it narrates the timeless tale of Salim and Anarkali, the famous star-crossed lovers of the Mughal era .
Having mesmerised audiences from across the world, this breathtaking production features a cast and crew of 150, starring some of the biggest Indian and international theatrical talent such as Mayuri Upadhya (Choreography), Manish Malhotra (Costume Design), Neil Patel (Scenic Design), David Lander (Lighting Design), John Narun (Projection Design), Richard Nowell (Sound Design) and Mukesh Chhabra CSA (Casting).
Unfolding in the expansive embrace of the 2000-seater Grand Theatre, the story is as epic as the backdrop it inhabits, where emperor Akbar’s son Salim returns victorious from the battlefield after fourteen years to fall in love with the beautiful courtesan, Anarkali. The emperor, disapproving of the relationship, imprisons Anarkali — leading Salim to declare war against his father. This tussle of love and rebellion threaten the future of the Mughal empire, creating the heart of a grand conflict.
The larger-than-life extravaganza features original songs from the movie, sung live, along with 550 exquisite costumes. Having won hearts with stellar performances in Mumbai, Delhi, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Canada and the United States, the theatrical returns to the stage that showcased its visual and narratorial grandeur to the Indian audience. The Grand Theatre has previously staged India’s largest musical, ‘The Great Indian Musical: Civilization to Nation’, also conceived and directed by Feroz Abbas Khan.
