Conceived by Cultural Medallion recipient Aravinth Kumarasamy, this dance-theatre by Apsaras Dance Company brings the temple of Banteay Srei to life through Bharatanatyam and mythic storytelling.
Presented by Singapore’s acclaimed Apsaras Dance Company, this dance-theatre draws inspiration from Banteay Srei—the 10th-century Cambodian temple known as the ‘Citadel of Women’. Revered for its rose-hued sandstone and intricate carvings of yoginis, apsaras, and divine tales, this sacred site becomes the muse for a breathtaking dance production that reimagines the temple as a living, breathing narrative space.
Conceived by Aravinth Kumarasamy and choreographed by Mohanapriyan Thavarajah, the presentation blends Bharatanatyam and other classical idioms to trace stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The production evokes the spirit of feminine divinity that flows through Banteay Srei, as goddesses and celestial figures return to life through movement, music, and memory.
With original music by Dr Rajkumar Bharathi and Sai Shravanam, and performed by a cast led by a stellar cast of company dancers, ‘AMARA’ is both a tribute and a transformation—where ancient stone gives rise to living legend. It is a celebration of sacred architecture, cross-cultural heritage, and the enduring power of the feminine divine.
