Step into the sound of the season as vocalist Sunanda Sharma brings alive the monsoon with music rooted in Banaras and Punjab.
The Indian monsoon has always had a special place in music. From the sound of falling rain to the feelings it stirs, it’s a season that’s been celebrated for centuries—especially in the Banaras Gharana, where the rains come alive through melody and mood. Through this musical evening titled ‘Malhar’, vocalist Sunanda Sharma explores this connection through a mix of classical and folk forms. The concert begins with a Khyal in Malhar and moves into a Thumri filled with themes of love and longing. Sunanda also revisits her Punjabi roots with a regional composition and presents Tappa—a lively, expressive form that started as a folk song of camel riders and later became part of classical music.
The evening ends with Kajari and Jhoola, two monsoon folk styles from the Poorab region that capture the playful joy of Radha and Krishna in the rain. A disciple of the legendary Dr. Girija Devi, Sunanda trained with her for nine years in the Guru-Shishya tradition. In ‘Malhar’, she brings together the richness of her Banaras training and Punjabi beginnings in a heartfelt tribute to the season of rain.
