Rooted in contemporary Indian urban folk, Bawari Basanti’s evocative performance follows a boy and his mother on a journey through fear, identity, love, and quiet defiance.
A poetic meditation on identity and becoming, ‘Dekho Beta’ explores the emotional journey of a young boy and his mother as they navigate fear, freedom, and the quiet rebellions that shape who we are. Conceived by independent musician and storyteller Bawari Basanti (Mahima Dayal Mathur), this concept album blends contemporary Indian urban folk with narrative and metaphor, while exploring the delicate balance between societal expectations and personal truth.
Performed by a talented ensemble featuring Vinayak Sharma (keyboard), Makrand Sanon (percussion), Ejaz Hussain (sarangi), and Akshay Dwivedi (upright bass), the music oscillates between restraint and release, grounding surreal storytelling in an intimate sonic world. The boy, imagined as a sponge absorbing the world, and the mother, both nurturing and constrained, offer a dual lens through which the narrative unfolds as they draw closer to their inner child.
Basanti’s distinct voice, shaped by years of classical training and cross-genre collaboration, brings depth, vulnerability, and quiet defiance to this immersive performance. With its blend of modern textures, traditional elements, and emotional lyricism, ‘Dekho Beta’ invites audiences into a space of reflection, resonance, and rediscovery.
