A mesmerising celebration of culture and individuality, ‘Sundari’ invites audiences to witness the dynamic interplay between two iconic Indian dance forms — Kathak and Lavani. The narrative begins with a Nawab, steeped in the elegance of Kathak, introducing what appears to be a traditional Kathak performance. The evening takes an unexpected turn when a bold Lavani dancer interrupts, claiming the stage with the declaration, “This is not your mehfil; it’s ours”.
Featuring the extraordinary choreography of Ashish Patil, an esteemed dance exponent known for his expertise in classical and semi-classical forms, the production brings unparalleled energy and depth to the stage. Lavani reveals her journey as the daughter of Kathak — acknowledging her classical roots while asserting her evolution into a proud, standalone art form. The Nawab, both intrigued and respectful, engages in a dialogue that highlights the shared heritage and unique identities of the two traditions.
The story crescendos with Lavani’s passionate plea for equal respect, a moment that resonates deeply. The Nawab recognises Lavani’s struggles and triumphs, affirming her individuality and proposing a harmonious finale. The performance ends with an electrifying climax, blending Kathak’s grace and Lavani’s exuberance, symbolising unity and mutual respect.
