Ace choreographers Mukta Nagpal and Ashish Rao present a piercing contemporary dance-theatre driven by a female protagonist who learns to navigate social and gender constraints in India.
This stunning and powerful piece of contemporary dance-theatre traces the perspective of a female protagonist journeying from girlhood to womanhood, as she struggles to exist within the pre-determined social boundaries that limit her search for love and security.
Director-choreographers Mukta Nagpal and Ashish Rao draw from resonant cultural elements like the ancient practice of ‘ghunghat’, where a woman is expected to veil her face with the far end of a saree or a dupatta to preserve her modesty. The performance, rich with poignant storytelling, theatrical elements, and visually arresting movements, shines a light on the larger issue of discrimination against women, and how in certain social landscapes, they continue to suffer even today.
Mukta Nagpal is a brilliant performer with a career spanning 13 years, and a passionate advocate of dance education. She was invited to represent India at the ‘Global Values Festival 2022’ and the ‘World Youth Festival 2024’ in Russia.
Having started his training from the Terence Lewis Institute, Ashish Rao has formed a unique vocabulary over a span of 14 years, challenging the boundaries of movement and athleticism. He has served as a resident choreographer for the World Dance School India and founded ‘Program Trinity’, a Mumbai-based dance education programme that has mentored over 500 students since 2019. Together, the dynamic duo aims to develop an Indian performance ensemble that is dedicated to the art of storytelling through contemporary dance.
