Discover how dancers can enhance movement efficiency, prevent injury, and build sustainable careers through science-based strategies, led by Dance Medicine expert Dr. Foram Patel.
In the world of dance, the body is both the medium and the message. Yet, all too often, dancers, teachers, and choreographers overlook the anatomical care needed to sustain for the long haul. This interactive workshop, led by Dr. Foram Patel – a licensed physical therapist in New York and New Jersey, and a performer at Shiamak USA – offers a rare opportunity to explore dance through the lens of clinical science. Dr. Patel is the founder of E-Motion Physical Therapy, a specialised clinic for performing artists where movement meets science to enhance performance. Her presentation is designed specifically for classical, contemporary, and Bollywood dancers, it is for the artists who want to better understand their own physicality and improve their practice.
With a Doctorate in Physical Therapy from Utica College and advanced training in Dance Medicine from the Harkness Center for Dance Medicine (NYU) and West Side Dance Physical Therapy, Dr. Patel brings a unique dual perspective – combining western rehabilitation techniques with the expressive demands of Indian dance. In this session, participants will be guided through the foundational principles of anatomical alignment, muscle activation, neuromuscular control, and injury prevention. Dr. Patel will explore the biomechanics of balance, flexibility, and turnout, addressing common stress points that often lead to injury. Emphasis will also be placed on posture analysis, recovery methods for fatigued or overworked bodies, and long-term strategies to preserve a dancer’s form and function over time.
This engaging and movement-based workshop encourages dancers to observe their bodies from a new perspective – not just as a channel of expression, but as a dynamic system that requires care, insight, and intelligent conditioning. Whether you are a seasoned performer, an instructor nurturing emerging talent, or a dedicated student, it offers a valuable toolkit to enhance technique, correct long-standing habits, and build a more sustainable and empowered relationship with dance.
