All the designers whose work will be featured in ‘India in Fashion’

The first-of-its-kind costume exhibit traces how India has been referenced on runways across the globe since the 18th century

By Neharika Manjani | 20th Mar 2023

Indian embroidery and textiles have long been the backbones of collections of several fabled European fashion houses. However, a deeper dive into the archives will reveal that India’s influence extends far beyond its exquisite embroidery and can be traced back to as early as the 18th century. From the country’s celebrated crafts to the silhouettes, India’s rich heritage has shaped global fashion in myriad ways. ‘India in Fashion: The Impact of Indian Dress and Textiles on the Fashionable Imagination’—the launch exhibition in the space of costume arts at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre—spotlights how countless creative directors from across the globe routinely turned to India for inspiration.

Curated by Hamish Bowles, one of fashion’s greatest voices, the show puts on view India-inspired pieces painstakingly created by noteworthy names from the industry. “Currently scheduled to open in April 2023, ‘India in Fashion’ will be the first exhibition of its kind in India to showcase historic Western fashion in this way, and on this scale,” says Bowles.

Designed by award-winning exhibition designer Patrick Kinmonth along with celebrated architect Rooshad Shroff (associate designer), visitors can expect to find the works of Christian Dior, Gabrielle Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Gianni Versace and Dries van Noten to name a few. For the first time ever, The Metropolitan Museum of Art has loaned several pieces from its collection, the largest loan in recent history, for the exhibition. Also on display will be specially-commissioned garments made by Indian designers including the likes of Sabyasachi Mukherjee, Rahul Mishra, Manish Malhotra, Anuradha Vakil, Anamika Khanna and more.
