Witness a globally celebrated folk music performance in a highly theatrical set-up as three generations of Manganiyar musicians perform their hearts out.
Imagine a stage with 33 veiled compartments, framed by carnival lights. Within them sit three generations of Manganiyar musicians, each a master of his own instrument. One by one, the curtains glide open, revealing the folk artists from Rajasthan, who pour their heart into one soaring symphony. Sounds magical, doesn’t it?
Conceived, arranged and directed by playwright and theatre director Roysten Abel, ‘The Manganiyar Seduction’ is both a celebration of culture and a seduction of the senses. The stage design uses dramatic elements inspired by Jaipur’s Hawa Mahal and architecture from Amsterdam. Against this theatrical backdrop, the ensemble plays melodies ranging from exuberant to melancholic, from thunderous to tranquil. Reverberating vocals and the earthy tunes of native instruments like khamancha, Sindhi sarangi, algoza, dhol, dholak, and morchang melt into each other, creating a sacred atmosphere.
Conceived in 2006, the acclaimed celebration of music and theatre has been staged over 700 times in more than 20 countries, garnering rave reviews from renowned publications such as The New York Times, London Evening Standard, The Daily Telegraph Sydney, The Wall Street Journal, and others.
