Celebrated vocalists Ruchira Kedar and Aastha Goswami honour Hindustani Classical music legend Smt. Girija Devi with a soulful concert, featuring Thumri, Dadra, Kajri, Chaiti, Hori, Rasiya, Baramasa, and more!
In memory of Padma Vibhushan Vidushi Girija Devi, on her birth anniversary, two of her senior disciples and leading Hindustani vocalists, Ruchira Kedar and Aastha Goswami, present ‘The Legend of Kashi’. Girija Devi, the doyen of the Banaras Gharana and its reigning Thumri queen, played a pivotal role in popularising Banaras Gharana Thumri. This unique performance highlights authentic Banaras Gharana semi-classical and folk music, which she brought into the spotlight and is now an integral part of India's musical heritage.
The concert brings together two powerful voices to explore the many moods of Indian classical music drawn from the rich folk traditions of the subcontinent. Both vocalists – Kedar and Goswami – have devoted decades to Hindustani classical and semi-classical music, and will be presenting compositions that are deeply connected to the Banaras Gharana and Smt. Girija Devi’s legacy, including works composed by her.
Kedar, one of the foremost vocalists of her generation, is known for her remarkable command and emotive depth across styles such as Khayal, Dadra, Hori, and Kajri. Her gayaki beautifully reflects the grace and structure of the Gwalior-Jaipur tradition, merging technical finesse with heartfelt expression.
Goswami continues the legacy of the Kirana Gharana with a distinctive voice rooted in devotional and semi-classical forms. Her repertoire includes rare and evocative Braj-based compositions, such as Badhai, Jhoola, and other festival songs, all imbued with emotional depth and stylistic precision.
The vocalists are accompanied by a stellar ensemble: Yashwant Vaishnav on tabla, known for his sensitive yet powerful rhythmic presence; Vanraj Shashtri on sarangi, whose rich melodic depth elevates every performance; and Rajendra Prasad Banerjee on harmonium, providing harmonic support with remarkable subtlety and skill.
