A dynamic blend of rhythm, devotion, and tradition, this spellbinding performance by the legandary Taalyogi Pandit Suresh Talwalkar brings Pakhawaj to life through taal, melody, and energy.
Pandit Suresh Talwalkar, a pioneer in Indian classical percussion, presents ‘Mrudang Kirtan’ – a mesmerising fusion of tradition, innovation, and spiritual depth. This unique performance breathes new life into the ancient art of Pakhawaj playing, blending intricate taal patterns with the vibrant energy of kirtan. Rooted in the Keertankar tradition, it reflects his lifelong dedication to rhythm as a powerful medium of expression and connection.
Conceptualised and directed by Taalyogi Padamshri Pt. Suresh Talwalkar, one of the foremost tabla maestros of our time, this presentation showcases the brilliance of his disciples as they bring his vision to life. The intricate interplay of Pakhawaj rhythms unfolds through solo, duet, and group performances, blending classical precision with the immersive energy of kirtan. This performance features Pt. Talwalkar, alongside his students and accompanists – Krushna Salunke, Partth Bhumkar, Rohit Khavle, and Prathamesh Taralkar – with vocal support from Nagesh Adgaonkar and harmonium accompaniment by Ameya Bichu. The evening also includes recitations by Pt. Talwalkar himself, deepening the audience’s connection to the rhythmic and philosophical essence of this revered art form.
With roots in the Keertankar tradition of Shri Dholebuva, Pt. Talwalkar has spent a lifetime shaping the rhythmic landscape of Indian classical music. His mastery, influenced by both North and South Indian traditions, has redefined the possibilities of percussion. This presentation stands as a testament to his innovative spirit.
Through taal compositions, intricate rhythmic cycles, and the powerful resonance of Pakhawaj, this performance transforms percussion into a storytelling medium – one that bridges heritage and evolution, tradition and innovation. As the performers engage in rhythmic dialogue, from call-and-response exchanges to synchronised flourishes, the stage becomes a space of both technical brilliance and spiritual elevation.
