Inspired by the timeless Mahabharata, Guru Shubhada Varadkar’s performance masterfully weaves together her poignant poetry, Sanskrit shlokas, soul-stirring music, and classical dance, offering a moving tribute to Karna’s valour and destiny.
A timeless tale of fate, duty, and unwavering resolve unfolds in ‘Suryaputra Mritunjaya’, a powerful monologue that brings to life the poignant journey of Karna, one of the most tragic yet heroic figures in the Mahabharata. This deeply introspective performance explores Karna’s inner struggles, his relentless quest for identity, and the injustices he faces – set against the grand backdrop of war and destiny.
The narrative begins with the revelation of Karna’s birth, tracing his journey from being abandoned as an infant to rising as a formidable warrior, forever bound by his loyalty to Duryodhana. His sacrifices, including the selfless offering of his divine kavach to Indra, mark him as a man of unshakable righteousness. Even Lord Krishna, who convinces Arjuna to battle against his kin, is unable to deter Karna from his chosen path – ultimately recognising him as Mritunjaya, the one who conquers death.
Conceptualised and brought to life by Guru Shubhada Varadkar – an acclaimed Odissi dancer, choreographer, and author – this production features a mesmerising musical score by Shri Vijay Tambe and Shri Kaushik Basu, enriched by the soulful vocals of renowned singer Hamsika Iyer. Enhancing its immersive depth, Sheetal Talpade’s masterful lighting design paints a vivid tapestry of light and shadow, drawing the audience into the world of Karna through a captivating fusion of classical dance, drama, and enchantment.
This powerful performance combines drama, movement, and poetry, offering an experience that is both visually and emotionally stirring. Don’t miss out!
