A witty mix of history and satire, this play celebrates Mark Twain’s timeless humour and his role as a pioneer of modern stand-up comedy.
In 1895, American humourist Mark Twain embarked on a world tour to recover from financial difficulties, with India and its rich cultural contrasts becoming the highlight of his journey. This play brings to life his historic 1896 lecture at Bombay’s Novelty Theatre, drawing inspiration from Twain's writings and his experiences during this pivotal time.
With sharp wit and biting satire, Twain captivated audiences with tales of the Mississippi, critiqued corrupt politicians, mocked religious zealots, and reflected on the contradictions of human nature. His humour remains as relevant and incisive today as it was over a century ago.
Written by Gabriel Emanuel, the playwright behind the acclaimed ‘Einstein’, this production is brought to life by Kolkata theatre veteran Vinay Sharma. Under his direction, Sharma’s portrayal captures Twain’s trademark charm and sharp observations, ensuring that his unique voice continues to resonate with audiences.
