Sign up your sonic senses for a joyride with sitarist Chirag Katti’s whimsical and exciting World Music ensemble that fuses Classical ragas with strains of blues – or even Bob Marley and The Beatles!
What’s special about a fusion band that seeks inspiration from the endless essence of Indian Classical music? Touted as a talent to watch out for, sitarist and composer Chirag Katti innovates by blending less-experimented-on Classical elements like raag Pilu and Western genres such as blues – and the effect is extraordinary.
Chirag’s ensemble ‘Sitar Raphsody’ runs free with the tenets of World Music – amped up by some of the finest young Indian musicians in the scene, such as Shruti Bhave (violin), Jarryd Rodrigues (saxophone), Shivahari Ranade (keyboard), Hansel Dias (bass guitar), Ashish Ragwani (tabla), and Shikharnaad Qureshi (djembe & drums). The audience is treated to a state of constant revelation through unique fusion-based original compositions played on the sitar – a sound that can only be described as young and unencumbered. Interspersed with their authentic melodic language are Classical-fusion renditions of Western greats like Bob Marley and The Beatles, or even popular Bollywood songs! The result is a high-energy concert that ties together the crimsons, ambers, and violets of the musical yarn in a rainbow tapestry you have not met before.
With an early initiation from his father and guru Pt. Shashank Katti, Chirag has established himself as an All India Radio ‘A Grade’ artist. Having made his international solo debut at Tokyo Radio Japan, he has performed across the U.S., South Africa, Austria, Dubai, and Bangkok. Chirag has collaborated with revered composers like Pyarelal Ramprasad Sharma (of Lakshmikant-Pyarelal), Ustad Taufiq Qureshi, Amit Trivedi, Sachin-Jigar, Salim-Sulaiman, Pritam, Anu Malik, and others. The ‘Surmani’ award recipient is also one of the youngest musicians to have recorded with Saregama H.MV.
